“It was me paying him a nice compliment,” Ben Duckett defends his comments on Yashasvi Jaiswal during India tour

During the Test tour of India earlier this year, England batter Ben Duckett faced severe backlash for his bizarre statement on Yashasvi Jaiswal.

In the third Test, Jaiswal slammed an explosive hundred (214* off 236 balls), prompting Duckett to say that England’s Bazball approach should be credited for the Indian opener’s whirlwind knock.

With his comments, Duckett suggested that England’s aggression with the bat has forced their opponents to play differently in the longest format.

However, Duckett’s claim drew flak from the fans and experts alike, including former England captains Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain.

Nearly six months later, Ben Duckett opened up on his remarks on Yashasvi Jaiswal, saying that it was rather a compliment for the young southpaw.

"It was actually me paying him a nice compliment. I’m pretty sure I said he was a world-class player, but no one spoke about that. Would I have said what I did during the fifth Test? No, because he played like that throughout the whole series, and he was incredible," Duckett said while speaking to The Daily Mail.

Jaiswal amassed 712 runs at an average of 89 in the five-Test series against England, which included two double tons and three half-centuries.

The left-hander became only the second Indian batter to aggregate 700 runs or more in a single Test series after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. His Player-of-the-Series performance helped India clinch the series 4-1.

On a separate note, Ben Duckett suggested how it made sense to follow coach Brendon McCullum’s advice of being the best version of himself instead of being a traditional Test opener.

Duckett scored 343 runs in 10 innings on the tour of India at a strike rate of 85.75, including one hundred.

"It was Baz (McCullum) who said: “Why do you have to go and bat like these previous openers? Why can’t you be the best version of yourself? That’s what I am. It has its downfalls: I nick off quite a lot. But I’ve also scored a lot of runs in that area. If I start to leave more balls, I bet you I’d still nick off and still score a lot less runs," Duckett stated.
