Team India recently clinched the Test series against England at home.
Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy of the Indian cricket team from Virat Kohli during Sourav Ganguly's tenure as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Earlier, Ganguly clarified that he didn't play a role in removing Kohli from the captaincy. The former Indian captain even revealed that the BCCI had asked Kohli to reconsider stepping down as the T20I captain. But now, the former BCCI president’s latest statement hints at a different story.
Under Kohli’s captaincy, Team India didn’t win any ICC trophy, and even they failed to reach the super fours at the T20 World Cup 2021. India reached the finals of 2017 ICC Champions Trophy and final of WTC 2021 under Kohli's captaincy.
But once Rohit was made captain, things changed, as the team reached the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2022, the WTC 2023 final, and the ODI World Cup 2023 final.
Recently, the Indian cricket team clinched the Test series against England at home, and Ganguly couldn’t hide his emotions while praising the current Indian skipper. He was not surprised by the way Rohit is leading the Indian team, saying that’s why he made him captain.
Sourav Ganguly told RevSportz: “Look at the way he captained in the World Cup. Taking India to the final. I think India was the best team in the competition till they lost the final. So, he is a good captain, IPL trophies. I am not surprised by the way he led.”
Ganguly signed off by saying, “He became the captain when I was the BCCI president, and I am not surprised by the way he has led the team. I made him the Indian captain because I saw the talent in him, and I am not surprised by what he has done.”
