Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are yet to play a T20I since the T20 World Cup last year.
With the Cricket World Cup scheduled this year, both of them mainly focused on ODIs and the longest format. However, the T20 World Cup is slated to take place in the West Indies and USA next year and it remains to be seen whether the two stalwarts make it to the squad or not.
After the World Cup 2023, where Rohit and Kohli performed exceptionally well, Team India are hosting Australia in five T20Is and the selectors have shown faith on the youngsters for this series.
However, former England skipper Kevin Pietersen feels Rohit and Kohli have "every chance" to be in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.
According to Pietersen, their performance in the IPL 2024 will play a pivotal role in determining their selection for the global event, scheduled to be held in June.
"They (Kohli and Rohit) have every chance, would have to see how they go in IPL, check them in the IPL. Because they have been so incredible servants to Indian cricket, you have to give them the respect and you have to ask them that according to form whether they fancy their chances or not. They are fabulous cricketers," Pietersen told IANS in an exclusive chat.
"IPL form is going to go a long way, because the final of the IPL and T20 World Cup 2024 wouldn't have much gap in between. Might be a swansong for couple of them. Let's wait and see, those kind of players who have dedicated their life to playing for India deserve the respect too," he added.
Before the T20 World Cup 2024, the Men in Blue are due to play three T20Is each against South Africa and Afghanistan.
It will be interesting to see if the selectors prefer the experienced duo of Rohit and Kohli or go with the young guns like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Rinku Singh and Tilak Varma.
