Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq to retire from ODIs after 2023 World Cup

Naveen made the decision to quit ODI cricket in order to prolong his playing career.

Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq on Wednesday (September 27) announced his decision to retire from ODI cricket after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, slated to be held in India from October 5 to November 19.

Naveen, who has been playing in franchise cricket across the globe, made the decision to quit the 50-over format in order to prolong his playing career.

Taking to Instagram, Naveen wrote: “It has been an absolute honour to represent my country would like to announce my retirement from ODI format at end of this World Cup and will continue to wear this blue jersey in t20 cricket for my country it hasn’t been an easy decision to make but to prolong my playing career had to take this tough decision would like to thank @afghanistancricketboard And all my fans for their support and unwavering love ????????️”

Naveen-ul-Haq has represented Afghanistan in seven ODIs so far, claiming 14 wickets at an average of 25.42. His last appearance in the 50-over format was in January 2021.

In the IPL 2023 season, Naveen played for the Lucknow Super Giants and grabbed the headlines for his heated altercation with India’s star batter Virat Kohli.
