India captain Rohit Sharma said that he wants to break former West Indies batter Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in international cricket while adding that he never thought he would be the one to do so.

Always labeled with the moniker of 'having an extra split second', Rohit has never been considered a power hitter like MS Dhoni, Brendon McCullum, or the mighty Chris Gayle. However, he still managed to wow the audience and fans with his six-hitting ability and once even held the joint record for most sixes in an ODI innings-16.

But currently, he is eyeing the record for most sixes in international cricket, presently held by Chris Gayle, who hit 553 sixes in his career from 1999-2021. Rohit Sharma has presently 539 sixes to his name and requires only 15 more to go past the Jamaican.

Rohit Sharma has 280 sixes in ODIs, 182 in T20Is, and another 77 in Tests.

I want to break Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record. Never in my life, I would have imagined that I would break Chris Gayle’s record. It’s funny (flex muscles).

I am not a muscle guy but I like to hit the ball hard. When I started playing cricket, I was told that timing is essential. Aerial shots were a big no. We were told that you can't play aerial shots. Basic was to keep your head intact, keep the bat close to your body, and play the ball along the carpet. If we used to play aerial shots, the coach used to throw us out of the game,” Rohit Sharma told journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.

For Rohit Sharma, who began his career in 2007 in ODIs and T20Is, with his Test debut coming in 2013, it will be a huge achievement, especially since he batted in the middle order for the initial phase of his career and only started opening the innings in 2013.
