Suryakumar and Brevis share the same dressing room in the IPL.
After impressing one and all with his exploits in the U-19 World Cup 2022, Brevis was roped in by the Mumbai Indians for INR 3 crore at the IPL mega-auction.
While MI endured a forgettable IPL 15 campaign that saw them finish bottom, Brevis’ performance was one of the very few positives for the five-time champions. The 19-year-old produced some brilliant knocks and returned with 161 runs from 7 innings at a strike rate of 142.47.
Not only the fans but Dewald Brevis’ display left his MI teammates impressed as well. Recently, star India batter Suryakumar Yadav said that he wants to learn the "no-look" shots from the Proteas batter when they share the dressing room in the upcoming IPL.
"I am just trying to copy you (Brevis) sometimes. The way you bat. You have to teach me one thing, how do you that no-look shot, no-look six? I just want to learn that from you," Surya said in an interaction with Brevis posted on MI TV.
Brevis responded: "It would be an honour, but I would love to learn lots of shots from you as well. The funny thing is My no - look shot just happens, it's weird but I don't know it just happens."
In October 2022, Brevis once again gave a glimpse of his extraordinary talent as he slammed a 35-ball century while playing in the CSA T20 Challenge for Titans against Knights.
Fondly known as ‘Baby AB’ for his AB de Villiers-like batting style, Brevis took the Knights bowling attack to the cleaners and ended up scoring 162 off just 57 balls at an astonishing strike rate of 284.21.
Lauding the South African for his knock, Surya said: "Last time I saw you smashed 160-165 runs off 50-55 balls in a T20 game. So now in ODIs, if you get to bat around 100 balls, are you going to score a triple hundred."
To which, Brevis replied: "It was like another normal day for me. It (that knock) just happened. I didn't even realise what I was doing at that moment, everything just happened in the moment, at one point I even told the non-striker that I think I'll try and hit every ball for six.
"I don't know it just happened it was a special innings. But I must say that what you have achieved is like incredible, congratulations on being the no.1 T20I batsman."
