Roger Binny becomes 36th BCCI President, replaces Sourav Ganguly

Binny's appointment was announced at the BCCI AGM in Mumbai.

Member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, Roger Binny has been appointed as the 36th president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Tuesday, October 18, 2022. He replaces former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who had been at the helm since 2019.

His appointment was announced at the BCCI AGM in Mumbai. Binny, 67, was the only candidate to have filed a nomination for the BCCI president's post. The election of the next set of office-bearers was a mere formality as all are set to be elected unopposed.

Binny was the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association President and will now vacate his position in the state body. He has also served as a member of the senior selection committee in the past when Sandeep Patil was the chairman.

Binny was known to recuse himself whenever the discussion on the topic of the selection of his son Stuart Binny in the Indian team came up in the meetings.

As per PTI reports, Ganguly held multiple meetings with stakeholders in New Delhi last week in hopes of getting a second term as the BCCI President. But he was told that there is no precedence of giving a second term to the Board president.

"Sourav was offered IPL chairmanship but he politely declined the offer. His logic was that he cannot accept becoming head of a sub-committee in BCCI after heading the same institution. He had expressed interest in continuing in the position," the BCCI source said.

As per reports, Ganguly is expected to now contest the elections for the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president post.
