Amid the speculations regarding Eoin Morgan’s retirement, former England skipper Michael Vaughan has backed Jos Buttler to become the team's white-ball captain, saying the decision would be a "no-brainer".

Morgan, who captained England to the 2019 World Cup title, has been battling form and fitness problems in recent times. He is set to call time on his international career later on Tuesday (June 28), according to numerous reports in the British media.

The 35-year-old led England in a record 126 ODIs and 72 T20Is, with Buttler being his deputy since 2015.

"For me it's a no-brainer that Jos Buttler takes over that role," Vaughan wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

"He's the best white-ball player in the world, he's got a very smart cricket brain, and he's got that calmness you need.

"I guess his personality might be different from Eoin. The one thing that Jos will have to be very, very good at is staying the same when he doesn't have a good game or two. That has been Eoin's massive strength -- he has never changed ..."

Notably, Vaughan batted for Jos Buttler’s inclusion in the England Test team as an opener. Notably, Buttler has been axed from the England Test side following the Ashes 2021-22 debacle. However, he has been in terrific form in white-ball cricket lately.

Playing for Rajasthan Royals, the right-hander finished the IPL 2022 season as the highest run-getter with 863 runs while he registered scores of 162* and 86* in the recently held three-ODI series against Netherlands.

According to him, Buttler would be a perfect fit under the current England team management of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

"If something as radical (as) Buttler as test opener was ever going to work it would be now," Vaughan said.

"I'd love to see him in this group playing like he played in the IPL ... Why not? England are generally one down early anyway, so they might as well be one down early by someone having a big old yahoo."
