South Africa’s young batter, Dewald Brevis, was one of the star performers at the recently concluded ICC U19 World Cup 2022 in the West Indies. He was named the Player of the Tournament thanks to his amazing outing.

Brevis scored a record-breaking 506 runs in the U19 World Cup 2022 and, given his stellar show, he was given a domestic contract by the Centurion-based franchise.

Brevis’ style, class, and heroics at the U19 World Cup 2022 led many to dub him “Baby AB de Villiers” and the young batter said it is a huge honor for him to be compared with the Proteas batting legend.

According to Cricket South Africa (CSA), Brevis stated: “To be called Baby AB...I don't even know what to say. I am nowhere near what AB de Villiers was. He is a guy I grew up idolizing, he was my role model from the first time I watched cricket. But I love being called that, it's a real honor and surreal.”

Meanwhile, with 506 runs, Dewald Brevis broke Shikhar Dhawan's all-time record of 505 runs in ICC U19 World Cup 2022 of most runs in a single edition. He scored 50 or more in five of the six innings, the joint-most by any player in a single edition of the tournament. Brevis also set a new record for most sixes in a U19 World Cup, with 18 sixes.

Reacting to his feat, Brevis said: “It was such a big honor to accomplish what I did. I've worked so hard for it and I believe just doing the simple things right made all the difference. That helped so much in the conditions we played and against the teams we faced. I was really humbled because you see the names of all these guys that have gone to the U19 World Cups over the years.”

He concluded, “They are guys that you grew up watching and players that have turned out to be absolute legends of the game. They dominated cricket for years and to hear your name mentioned amongst theirs is unbelievable. It's a massive motivation for me to continue in the same way.”
