WATCH - Steve Smith picks his favorites for Indian Test captain role; congratulates Virat Kohli's captaincy stint

Virat Kohli announced his decision to step down as Test captain on 15th January.

Premier Australia batter Steve Smith said that one between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul should lead Team India in the Test cricket going forward. Virat Kohli stepping down as the India Test skipper gave a massive headache to management about who to name as the next captain in the longest format of the game. 

There have been many speculations regarding who will be the next Indian team skipper in the Tests. Many fans along with cricket experts have named their choices for the vacant leadership position in the Indian Test team. 

There have been many reports suggesting that one between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul might lead the Indian team in the longest format of the game. Although there’s no confirmation yet officially, an announcement is expected to be made soon.

During a Question and Answer (Q&A) session on his official Instagram account, Australian batter Steve Smith was asked by a fan who does he thinks will be Virat Kohli’s successor as the leader of the Indian Test team. 

Replying to this, Smith congratulated Virat Kohli on a successful stint as the Indian Test skipper and mentioned that Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as favorites to captain the side. 

“Firstly, congratulations to Virat who’s led the Indian team superbly well for the last six or seven years. He has done a terrific job and looking forward I’d say probably Rohit (Sharma)  or KL (Rahul)  are the two favorites,” Steve Smith said. 

Notably, Virat Kohli tasted huge success during his 7-year stint as the Indian Test captain. The 33-year-old led India to 40 wins from 68 matches at a win percentage of 58.92%, which makes him the most successful Indian skipper.
