Following Australia’s win against England in the first Test of Ashes 2021-22 in Gabba, Brad Hogg recalled Rishabh Pant’s match-winning 89-run knock at the same venue earlier this year, calling it the best innings by a touring batter.

Rishabh Pant played one of his best Test innings during the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar trophy at Gabba, earlier this year.

The southpaw stole the show as he notched up 89* runs off 138 deliveries helping India end Australia’s 33-year-long undefeated streak at the venue and seal the series 2-1, as India chased down the stiff total of 328 runs.

Lauding Rishabh Pant’s heroics at Gabba, former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg said that his innings was one of the best Test innings under pressure as he ‘annihilated’ the Australian attack.

"Pant's innings out at the Gabba was one of the best Test innings under pressure I have ever seen. It was fantastic, it was brilliant and it just annihilated the Australian attack,” Brad Hogg said.

Coming to the first match of Ashes 2021-22, after being dominated by Australia on the first two days of the match, Joe Root (89) and Dawid Malan (82) led visitors’ fightback on Day 3 but they failed to counter the Australian bowlers on Day 4.

England suffered a batting collapse on day four as they lost eight wickets for just 77 to set Australia a target of only 20 runs, which they chased in 5.1 overs.

Talking about the same, Brad Hogg said that innings of Joe Root and Dawid Malan gave England a great chance to put a total on the board and put Australia under pressure.

He said that even though Root and Malan played special innings but Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 89-run knock against Australia earlier this year was the best Test innings at Gabba from a touring team.

"But when I look at this particular Test match right now, the Root and Malan innings to fight England back into the contest and set this up today, the fourth day, to give England a chance to put up a total on the board and to trouble Australia, I thought that was brilliant counteract of innings as well.

“Malan and Root were special but the way Pant annihilated Australia and took the game home with that 89 not-out was better than those two and probably the best innings we have seen out at the Gabba from a touring team," he said.

The second Test of Ashes 2021-22, which will also be a pink-ball Test, will begin from 16th December in Adelaide.
