Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch is confident of playing in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in October after he undergoes surgery on his injured right knee.

Finch suffered a cartilage injury in St Lucia earlier this month and was ruled out of the recent ODI series against the West Indies as well as the white-ball tour of Bangladesh next month. Presently, he is fulfilling his two-week quarantine period in a Melbourne hotel.

He believes that there is plenty of time for him to recover and return to lead Australia in the T20 World Cup 2021 to be played in the UAE and Oman later this year.

Finch told SEN Radio: “I had a little injury just doing a fielding session before I left – I've never had any knee problems – and it just started to get a bit sore. The more that we trained and played … stopping and starting, turning, that kind of thing was causing it some issues.”

He continued, “So I had a couple of scans in the West Indies and there was a little bit of cartilage, a bit of meniscus damage. Hopefully (it will be) a quick cleanout once I'm out of quarantine and it'll have me back up and running in plenty of time for the T20 World Cup.”

Australia was thrashed 4-1 in the T20I series but bounced back in the ODI series to clinch the series with a 2-1 margin under Alex Carey's captaincy earlier this week and Finch said: “It's not a flattering scoreline but the West Indies have got a very experienced side … (and) some brute power.”

The Aussie further explained, “But I think the fact we were in three of those games was a real positive. We should've got over the line in the first one – that was a really ordinary batting display chasing 140 – then we won the fourth game and were in the fifth one for a fair amount of time.”

He concluded, “So with a really inexperienced group, the fact we were able to match the West Indies for a lot of that series – and we just got blown away in a couple of different parts, which when you've got a group that is still developing (is going to happen) – was a real positive.”

Finch expects Matthew Wade to captain Australia in Bangladesh, with the Hobart Hurricanes veteran having assumed the role previously in Finch's absence. Along with Finch, Australia will also be without three of their most experienced batsmen, with Steve Smith also still rehabilitating from tennis elbow, and David Warner and Glenn Maxwell having made themselves unavailable for this tour.
