Indian players sport black armbands in honour of late Yashpal Sharma in warm-up game

Yashpal Sharma passed away after a cardiac arrest on July 13.

The Indian team players sported black armbands to mourn the sad demise of the former India cricketer and the 1983 World Cup winner Yashpal Sharma on day one of their three-day warm-up game against Select County XI on Tuesday (July 20) in Durham.

India's 1983 World Cup hero Yashpal Sharma passed away at the age of 66 due to a cardiac arrest in New Delhi on Tuesday (July 13). The late cricketer was the teammate of the current Team India head coach Ravi Shastri and both were part of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning side.

To pay respect to the former India batsman and selector Yashpal Sharma, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team wore black armbands on Day 1 of the warm-up game against Select County XI in Durham and the BCCI shared a number of pictures on its official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

Sharing the pictures, the BCCI wrote: “#TeamIndia are sporting black armbands to mourn the sad demise of former India cricketer Yashpal Sharma ji, who sadly passed away on 13th July after a cardiac arrest. Head Coach @RaviShastriOfc was his teammate in the 1983 World Cup-winning squad.”

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane as well as senior pacers R Ashwin and Ishant Sharma have been rested for the warm-up game against Select County XI.

India won the toss and chose to bat first in the three-day warm-up match against Select County XI in Durham. The warm-up game is being played behind closed doors, but fans can watch it on Durham's YouTube channel.
