Ajinkya Rahane looked ready to take over India's captaincy when he replaced Virat Kohli at the helm of the Test team and won two of the three remaining Test matches in Australia. After the fairytale series for India, many former cricketers and cricket 'experts' want Kohli to step down as captain and relay the captaincy to Rahane permanently.

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has also tended towards believing the same but he feels that Kohli can continue till 2023. According to him, Kohli will have to step down from captaincy and make Rohit Sharma the leader of the limited-overs sides if his team fails to win the 2021 T20 World Cup or the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

Monty Panesar told SportsKeeda, "If India has a questionable series. If they don’t win the T20 World Cup, or the World Cup, because they’re both in India. I think after that Virat Kohli will have to step down. His captaincy is there but he definitely needs to win one out of the T20 or the World Cup in India."

The former spinner also called Virat Kohli a dictator while saying that he'll now have to listen to Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, and Ravi Shastri to make his decisions. Kohli will have to manage the leaders on his side if Panesar is to be believed.

He said, "It’s an interesting debate. I think Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma’s combination works really well when they’re both given the leadership. It will be the skill of Virat Kohli to manage all the leaders now. This is going to be the next part of his captaincy."

"He likes his dictatorship style but this time he’ll have to start listening to other people. There may be times during the Test series when he may have to listen to the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Shastri, and Rohit Sharma," the 38-year-old added.
