In cricket, there have been many instances of two brothers playing for the country, for example, the Marsh brothers (Shaun and Mitchell Marsh). But twins playing cricket for their country that too in the same team is very rare.

The most famous pair of twins to have played Test cricket is the Waugh brothers from Australia. Today (5 April) is the day when they both played their first match for Australia back in 1991. The two played their first Test series for the Baggy Greens against West Indies in Trinidad.

Steve Waugh made his international Test debut in 1985 while Mark made his debut in 1991 that too in place of his brother.

When they both played together in 1991, Steve played as a lower-order batsman and managed to score just 26 runs, Mark, on the other hand, scored 64 runs in the first innings. Both of them did not get to bat in the second innings but were responsible for the catches of West Indies greats Gordon Greenidge and Viv Richards in the hosts’ innings.

The Waugh brothers went on to defined Australia’s era of success in the late 1990s and played more than 100 Tests each.

Mark Waugh retired in 2002 after playing 128 Tests and scored 8029 runs to his name, while Steve, on the other hand, retired as captain of the team in 2004 with 168 Tests and 10,927 runs, making him the second-highest run-scorer in Australia’s history behind his former skipper Allan Border.
