Former India captain MS Dhoni explained his batting approach in a promotional event in Haryana's Gurugram on Sunday. He has spent most of the time batting at number six. One of the prominent finishers in his prime, Dhoni revealed how to be practical while batting to contribute more for the team.

Dhoni said he knows if he won't be able to get past 30 runs, then he would try for 30 runs only. A batsman needs to understand his capability to bat accordingly.

MS Dhoni returns to training but remains unavailable for the West Indies series

He said, "It is very important to have a practical approach. If I'm batting at number 6 and play 15 balls, I know if I score 25-30 runs, it is very good, outstanding performance. But at the same time, there can be hindrances. You think about scoring for your team and go for big hits, it may also cost you a wicket. So you will have to practically set up what your target is."

He added, "As I already said, it is important to focus on controllable things. You have to work on it, and the process is very important to succeed."

Dhoni also said that he had never planned to play for India, but cleared that he looks to contribute irrespective of the organization he is representing. Whether it is a club team, or country, he always played without thinking about the future.
