Beyond the fallout with the board officials over Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, Agarkar’s rift with Laxman have been cited as one of the primary reasons behind his decision not to seek an extension for a further term.
Agarkar and Laxman were reportedly 'poles apart' regarding structural policy decisions, including the management and rehabilitation timelines for centrally contracted injured players and the scheduling overlaps between India 'A' matches and domestic competitions like the Irani Cup.
There has been growing scrutiny over whether players are being rushed back prematurely. Cases involving centrally contracted players, where stars enter rehab, get declared fit, and immediately suffer secondary breakdown injuries, put the CoE's Sports Science division under severe scrutiny.
This breakdown of operational clarity culminated in a massive ideological clash between Agarkar and Laxman.
Recently, India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the issue, saying the long list of injured player was not ‘fair’ on Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill.
“If I give you an honest answer, then yes (it is a problem). Especially in Test cricket and ODI cricket, because the next World Cup is in the ODI format. And more importantly, it’s not fair on a young captain as well if he doesn’t get the best team, playing consistently and regularly and not being on the path consistently," Gambhir said in a press conference after the end of Afghanistan T20I series.
“That’s why I have to be dead honest. Yes, as a coach, I can take all the criticisms, but for me, I think it is important for Shubman to get the best team at 11 as many times as he can in red ball and in white ball formats as well," he added.
While Agarkar and Gambhir demanded tighter accountability and clear schedules, Laxman defended the CoE, saying it’s ambit was more than just injury management.
The BCCI convened a high-profile review meeting in Mumbai on September 3 to address recent team performances and outline a future roadmap, but Agarkar failed to attend in person or join virtually. While board officials stated the meeting was called on short notice, the absence was widely viewed internally as the final indicator of an unresolvable differences.
Ajit Agarkar's formal contract concludes on October 4, 2026. The BCCI has reportedly initiated a search for a new chief selector, with former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel currently emerging as the front-runner to take charge.
