Speculations are rife that a fallout over Rohit Sharma's ODI future was a primary catalyst behind Ajit Agarkar’s impending departure as the BCCI chief selector.
However, the inner friction between Agarkar and the Indian cricket's administrative structure spans much deeper than a single selection meeting or individual player disagreement.
According to a report published by The Telegraph, the differences started as early as Agarkar’s second selection meeting in July 2023 when he opposed appointing Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the T20I tour of Ireland.
Bumrah was returning from a grueling, year-long injury hiatus, and Agarkar preferred to name Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captain instead—who had already been designated to lead the men's squad at the upcoming 2023 Asian Games. His primary goal was to manage and reduce the ace pacer’s workload right before the crucial ODI World Cup on home soil.
However, the BCCI stepped in and overruled the new chief selector. The board countered that Bumrah was highly enthusiastic about leading the side, prompting them to enforce their decision.
This early intervention by the board ultimately set the tone for a series of underlying tensions regarding administrative boundaries, player management, and strategic transition planning that would shadow Agarkar's entire three-year tenure.
The friction reached a boiling point after the selection committee reportedly decided to move on from Rohit Sharma in white-ball cricket. South Zone selector Pragyan Ojha, a close friend of Rohit, was tasked with communicating this long-term transition plan to the veteran opener.
However, Rohit was unhappy with the decision and reportedly reached out to a senior BCCI official. Shortly after, the board secretary Devajit Saikia blindsided the selection committee by issuing an official public statement backing Rohit’s continuation and dismissing retirement talk.
Those close to the developments noted that Agarkar felt slighted, angry, and undermined by the board’s public intervention. He reportedly realized that the selection committee’s autonomy regarding senior players had been heavily restricted, making it nearly impossible to execute transitional decisions.
