Mohsin Naqvi was adamant that he'll present the Asia Cup trophy to winning Indian team.
He is immensely disliked in India because of his inflammatory remarks against the country following the Pahalgam terror assault. In the 2025 men's Asia Cup, the BCCI and Indian team refused to take the trophy from him, and he left the Dubai International Cricket Stadium with the silverware.
It happened again on Sunday, when the India women's team did not attend the presentation ceremony after defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final, while Naqvi waited on the podium to award the prize.
Now PTI has reported that though Mohsin Naqvi has a clause allowing an extension of the tenure as the ACC chairman, he is unlikely to get the majority of the support he needs from the other member boards. While it’s unclear what BCCI might do, given the cold relationship between India and Pakistan, it’s hard to imagine India backing Naqvi.
The ACC presidency is rotated among full member boards—India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka—for a two-year term determined at the Annual General Meeting, so no single country holds it consecutively by default.
An incumbent's term can be extended beyond two years if another member of the board formally proposes it at the AGM and the complete membership unanimously approves it; each extension adds a year rather than resetting the term.
Jay Shah of India served for almost four years, from January 30, 2021, to December 6, 2024. His initial two-year term was extended by two one-year terms. Shah served as the BCCI secretary during his tenure, similar to Naqvi's simultaneous function as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
After that, Shammi Silva of Sri Lanka held an interim position until Naqvi was chosen to complete a new two-year term beginning in April 2025.
