As part of a larger "clean-up" effort being conducted behind the scenes, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly planning to remove senior selector and former Test cricketer Aaqib Javed from the national selection committee.
The announcement was made a few days after senior players Salman Ali Agha, Imam-ul-Haq, and Mohammad Rizwan were sent back from England. This move has sparked debate regarding the team administration and selection process.
“Aaqib is also likely to be told to focus on his role as Director of Development at the Lahore High-Performance Centre,” a source told as per PTI.
The source further stated that Rizwan, Imam, and Salman were sent back as part of the PCB's larger plot, with the first two being dropped due to their behavior in the dressing room in addition to their poor form.
He went on to say that Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the PCB, was eager for a "clean-up" and that the selection committee might be the next area to change.
“The rest of the players sent back were done so on the recommendation of interim red-ball head coach Mike Hesson, who wanted to try out some players he had worked with in the white-ball camp.
Aqib, who is considered the blue-eyed boy of the chairman, is also likely to be told to just focus on his role as Director of Development at the Lahore High-Performance Centre,” the source added.
The source claims that former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, another selector, has already made a resignation offer.
Members of the advisory and selection committees have also received notices from the PCB requesting explanations about Imam and Rizwan's selection for the England tour as well as the standards by which the selection policy was developed.
“A new selection committee could be announced after the England tour,” the source said.
Aaqib is one of the most influential people within the PCB and has significant say in selection and other team-related matters. If Hesson accepts the role, PCB is also thinking of keeping him as the red-ball team's permanent head coach, according to the source.
“If he doesn't agree, then the board will appoint someone else before the next home series against Sri Lanka in November,” he added.
Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, and Salman Ali Agha are set to appear before a committee and explain their conduct related to certain incidents during the West Indies and England tours.
Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul, who were sent back along with seven players, are set to be offered other assignments with the PCB.
