BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on Tuesday (July 28) announced that the board will not renew fielding coach T Dilip’s contract, while also confirming that the board has parted ways with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate after the Dutchman’s two-year tenure ended.
The contracts of both coaching staff expired after India’s tour of the UK, where the Men in Blue managed to win only one out of nine completed games.
“Assistant Ryan Ten Doeshchate's two year contract with Indian men's team ended on June 10. Fielding coach T Dilip, who was given a one year extension also had his contract end on June 8. They continued till the end of India's tour of United Kingdom. However the BCCI is not giving them any extension. There is no question of accepting resignation as the contract has ended,” Saikia said while speaking to PTI.
The official further stated that the board was in talks with a couple of names to take over the job, starting with the two-Test series against Sri Lanka next month.
“We are currently in talks with two to three names and expect to finalise the details within a day or two. India will have a new fielding coach for tour of Sri Lanka,” he added.
Saikia’s statement comes after it was reported that ten Doeschate stepped down as India's men's assistant coach following the conclusion of the white-ball series in England.
Earlier, PTI had reported that the former Netherlands cricketer was explicitly promised the role of fielding coach when head coach Gautam Gambhir originally brought him into the setup.
Dilip was originally slated to exit after the 2025 Champions Trophy, alongside other members of the previous regime. However, he was given a one-year extension, leaving ten Doeschate without a specialized domain and his world-class fielding expertise remained underutilized.
Following his exit from the Indian setup, Ryan ten Doeschate is likely to return to the Indian Premier League (IPL). He will reportedly rejoin the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coaching staff, a franchise where he previously won two titles as a player and later served as a fielding coach.
While Dilip’s future remains unclear, India are in desperate need of a fielding coach, with just over a year remaining for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The team was poor on the field throughout the UK tour and even in the Zimbabwe T20I series under a new coaching setup.
If a few reports are to be believed, Subhodeep Ghosh, who has been in the system for last six to seven years since the time of Rahul Dravid at the NCA, is the front-runner to take over the fielding coach role.
