Ajit Agarkar's tenure as BCCI chief selector ends in September this year.
The recent report of Ajit Agarkar seeking an extension to his tenure as the chief of the BCCI selection committee has been dispelled as a rumor. As per a recent PTI report, Agarkar, whose tenure is set to end in September 2026, hasn't sought an extension until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The report further stated that Agarkar’s future as BCCI chief selector will only be decided once his tenure ends later this year. Agarkar became the chairman of the senior men's selection committee in 2023, and when the Men in Blue won the Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup in 2024, his tenure was extended by one year in 2025.
There were rumors that after India’s T20 World Cup 2026 win, Agarkar had approached the BCCI and sought an extension to his tenure as chief selector until the end of the 2027 ICC World Cup.
A senior board member, however, clearly refuted these rumors, stating that no such discussion has occurred and that it won't start until Agarkar's term ends in September 2026. According to the BCCI official, Agarkar has no justification for requesting an extension since the constitution allows top selectors to serve for a maximum of four years.
"The selection panel is a subcommittee of the BCCI, and the selectors' contract runs till September this year. Ajit's contract ends in September, and after that, the BCCI secretary and Ajit will have to decide whether he will continue till next year's ODI World Cup. A senior selector can continue up to four years as per the constitution, and he doesn't need to seek an extension,” the BCCI official told PTI.
After Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R. Ashwin retired from Test cricket, Agarkar was credited with making some difficult decisions and facilitating a seamless transition.
India has won three ICC white-ball trophies under Agarkar, but their performance in Test matches has been lacking, as they have lost two home series against South Africa and New Zealand.
Even India's head coach Gautam Gambhir had credited Ajit Agarkar for India’s T20 World Cup 2026 win.
“Ajit Agarkar takes a lot of flak, but the honesty with which he has worked has been incredible,” Gambhir told reporters in the post-match press conference.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had decided to drop Shubman Gill from India’s T20 World Cup team due to his poor performance and include Ishan Kishan despite him being away from the national team for two years.
