“The more they play, the better it is”- Irfan Pathan says Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma crucial for revival of ODIs; calls for more tri-series

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has called for legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to continue playing ODI cricket even after the ICC World Cup 2027 concludes, if the 50-over format needs to survive.

Building on Kohli and Rohit's increased passion in ODI cricket, Irfan Pathan emphasized the importance of maximizing their presence. The former all-rounder argued for extended ODI schedules, including five-match series, tri-series, and quadrangular competitions, to keep the format interesting and spectators engaged.

"That's why I am repeatedly saying one thing. Why can't we have five ODIs instead of three? Why can't we have a triangular or quadrangular series? Why can't we arrange that, because these two greats play only one format? It won't be wrong to say that if a lot of interest has returned to ODI cricket, these two have brought it," Pathan said on Star Sports.

Even in the ICC ODI batting rankings, Rohit Sharma reigns supreme at the top spot, while Virat Kohli is placed at the second spot.

Pathan emphasized that Kohli and Rohit are not only attracting large crowds but also doing well on the field as he continued his case for making the most of the ODI window. He advocated for frequent match exposure, especially in domestic cricket, to sustain both rhythm and interest with the World Cup still a long way off.

"The biggest thing is that they are also performing. The World Cup is far away. You will definitely want to think about it, but I am also thinking that the more we get to see them, that these two players should keep playing, keep representing India, and when they are not playing for India, they should keep playing domestic cricket because the more they play, the better it is," Pathan observed.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be seen in action when India and New Zealand face off in a three-ODI series from January 11.
