Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket last month.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six runs in the final to clinch their first-ever IPL title on Tuesday (June 3). The Rajat Patidar-led side, that has cricketing icon Virat Kohli, ended its 18-year long wait for a maiden IPL trophy.
After the elusive triumph, Kohli took everyone by surprise as he mentioned about the Test format. The stalwart said while winning the IPL is special, it is still five levels below Test cricket.
In the post-match interview with former Australia opener Matthew Hayden, Kohli reiterated his deep respect for the traditional format, urging youngsters to embrace its challenges for global recognition.
“Test cricket has always been five levels above everything else. It’s a format I’ve loved deeply and respected the most. Even now, I urge the youngsters coming through to treat Test cricket with that same respect. Performing well in Tests earns you respect worldwide — it’s a badge of honour,” Kohli said.
The 36-year-old, who called time on his Test career last month, also highlighted the format’s profound impact on his personal and professional development. “It shaped me not only as a cricketer but as a person.”
Kohli played an instrumental role in RCB’s maiden IPL title this season as he amassed 657 runs from 15 innings at a strike rate of 144.71, including eight half-centuries.
Reflecting on the win, the star batter said, “This IPL win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. After 18 years of chasing this dream, to finally have it is unbelievable. I gave this team my youth, my prime and my experience. I was overcome with emotion after the last ball.”
He hailed the team’s resilience and management’s backing throughout the campaign. “This group of players, this management — they’ve been outstanding. We had the right balance and confidence in our squad, even when many questioned our tactics. This victory belongs to every player, every family member, and everyone who stood behind us.”
