David smashed Jason Holder for three successive sixes to seal the deal for MI.
Opting to bat first, the Royals rode on opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s whirlwind 124 off 62 balls to rack up a mammoth 212/7 on the board.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was the stand-out bowler for MI, returning with the figures of 2 for 34 in his four-over spell.
In reply, the hosts lost skipper Rohit Sharma (3) early but the duo of Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green added 62 runs for the second wicket to steady the ship. Ashwin broke the stand by dismissing Kishan on 28 off 23 balls. The off-spinner also removed the dangerous-looking Green for 26-ball 44.
Despite losing the two set batters in quick succession, MI continued with their attacking approach as Suryakumar Yadav produced a dazzling half-century (55 off 29 balls) before being dismissed in the 16th over.
With 61 needed off 26 balls, Tim David arrived in the middle and he slammed 45* off 14 balls to help MI register their highest successful chase at the Wankhede Stadium.
The five-time champions required 17 runs off the last over and David smashed Jason Holder for three successive sixes to seal the deal in 19.3 overs.
For his match-winning exploits, Tim David received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on Twitter.
