Former England skipper Michael Vaughan said Prithvi Shaw cannot keep relying on his past performances after his poor start in the IPL 2023 for the Delhi Capitals (DC). The young right-handed opener has been in dismal form and has not been able to go past 20-run mark yet.

12, 7, 0, 1, 0 and 13 have been Prithvi Shaw’s scores in this season’s IPL and while his quick starts in the past couple of IPL seasons have been beneficial for the DC team, his form has degraded in the IPL 2023.

Speaking on the Cricbuzz, Vaughan said: “I think he needs a big innings. He needs some runs. He can’t keep going on reputation. He can’t keep going with what is done in the past. He needs to produce the runs here and now. He has got a poor start. He has not gotten out of Powerplay yet with the bat in hand yet.”

Vaughan highlighted how Shaw has been vulnerable against extreme pace and short pitch deliveries.

Early in the tournament, Mark Wood bowled him. His feet went nowhere. It was like he was waiting for the short ball and he was nowhere near the line or the pitch of the ball,” Vaughan said.

Earlier, after the game against Gujarat Titans (GT), former India captain Virender Sehwag bemoaned the lack of development shown by Shaw.

He has been dismissed playing those kinds of shots so many times…but he should also learn from his mistakes, right? Look at Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him and is now playing Test, ODIs and T20Is for India, but Shaw is still struggling in IPL.

He has to make the most of this IPL platform and score runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 600-odd runs in an IPL season. Shubman Gill also scored big runs. So even Shaw has to be consistent with his IPL scores,” he said on Cricbuzz.

Shaw failed to come good in DC’s chase of 128 against KKR and Vaughan had said, “It was a good opportunity for the 23-year-old to get back into form, “It is a target that won’t intimidate you as a batter you are not looking at 190s. There is no real pressure in terms of the scoring rate. I think he comes out plays the way he has done in the past but he needs to be there at the end of the sixth. He has to see his team home and 60-70 not out if he can be.”

It remains to be seen whether DC continue to show faith in Prithvi Shaw or bring in some other batter like Sarfaraz Khan in his place.
