During the recently held IPL 2022 season, South Africa’s Dewald Brevis showed why he is touted as the future batting superstar.

After impressing one and all with his exploits in the U-19 World Cup 2022, Brevis was roped in by the Mumbai Indians for INR 3 crore at the IPL mega-auction.

While MI endured a forgettable IPL 15 campaign that saw them finish bottom, Brevis’ performance was one of the very few positives for the five-time champions.

The 19-year-old produced some brilliant knocks and returned with 161 runs from 7 innings at a strike rate of 142.47.

Speaking to NDTV, Dewald Brevis reflected on his maiden IPL campaign with Mumbai Indians and lauded Rohit Sharma's captaincy.

"As a player I couldn't have asked for a better captain," Brevis said in an exclusive chat.

"He backed me and supported me as a young player. He allowed me to be myself and go out there and enjoy the game," he added.

"He is a captain that wants the best out of everybody. I think he is a great leader on and off the field. There is so much to learn from his captaincy and knowledge of the game. He is an exceptional captain," he further stated.

Mumbai Indians managed to register only four wins from 14 league matches in the IPL 2022. They looked out of sorts right from the beginning, suffering eight successive defeats to be knocked out of the playoffs reckoning.

However, Brevis enjoyed the team environment created by MI on and off the field.

"The MI team atmosphere was amazing on and off the field. There was always lots of fun, laughter and bonding between everyone in the MI family. It is such a great honour for me to be part of MI," he said.

"MI made me feel part of the family. I felt so welcome and comfortable in this team. I could be myself in front of everyone," he concluded.
