Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) IPL 2022 tournament was a replay of their performance in the IPL 2021. Though they managed to win 6 matches out of 14 and amassed 12 points, they still managed to finish in the 8th spot out of 10 teams.

SRH had started off with 2 losses, then won five matches on a trot, and then suffered five straight losses again, putting an end to their chances of making it into the playoffs, as they ended the tournament with 6 wins.

One of the biggest reasons for their failure was Kane Williamson, who just couldn’t get going throughout the tournament with a strike rate of under 100 in T20 cricket. Their biggest buy-in IPL 2022 auction was Nicholas Pooran for INR 10.75 crores, and then Romario Shepherd for INR 7.75 crs.

Some of the big-money buys like Abhishek Sharma (INR 6.5 crs) and Rahul Tripathi (INR 8.5 crs) did extremely well, while some of the players with whom SRH had many expectations failed to play to their potential and might get released to free up funds for the 2016 IPL champions.

Keeping this in mind, here are the three players that Sunrisers Hyderabad might release ahead of IPL 2023.

MARCO JANSEN

Marco Jansen was bought by the SRH franchise in the IPL 2022 auction for INR 4.2 crs after a very impressive stint in IPL 2021 with Mumbai Indians. However, Jansen couldn’t do much in this tournament for the SRH when they needed him to do his best. In 8 matches, the South African pacer, picked 7 wickets at an economy of 8.56.

He looked out of sorts in some matches. One such example of this came in the 40th match of IPL 2022 against Gujarat Titans. Tasked with defending 22 runs in the last over to clinch a win for his team, Jansen was taken to the cleaners by Rashid Khan, who hit him for 3 sixes in the over after Tewatia had started the over with a six. In the end, he went for 63 runs in his 4 overs as SRH lost the match from a winning position.

ABDUL SAMAD

Abdul Samad was one of the three players who were retained by SRH ahead of IPL 2022 along with Umran Malik and Kane Williamson. While Williamson struggled with the bat but captained the team well and Umran Malik was the breakout star of the IPL 2022, Abdul Samad got lost in the shuffle.

He had done decently well as a finisher for SRH in IPL 2021 but failed to get game time this season, playing only 2 matches, as SRH opted to have Pooran as their designated finisher with Aiden Markram for support.

SRH might make some big changes in their squad before the IPL 2023, after getting to know the strengths and weaknesses of their players, Samad might see himself being released before the auction.

ROMARIO SHEPHERD

West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd was one of the most expensive buys for SRH in the IPL 2022 auction at INR 7.75 crs. However, instead of giving him a long run in the tournament in the XI, Shepherd spent most of his time on the bench and got to play only 3 games.

He showed his big-hitting prowess in those opportunities hitting 5 sixes and 2 fours and also picking 3 wickets. However, SRH might be enticed to let him go ahead of the auction and probably get him back for a much lesser price in the IPL 2023 auction.
