Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Monday (November 22) revealed that he and Shreyas Iyer won’t be seen in action for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ahead of the IPL 2022, there will be a mega auction with the addition of two new franchises namely Ahmedabad and Lucknow.

According to the retention rules, the existing eight franchises can retain a maximum of 4 players (up to three Indians or utmost two overseas players) from their IPL 2021 squads while the two new teams will be able to acquire three players from the player pool before the mega auction.

Speaking on the same line, Ashwin has hinted that neither him nor Shreyas will be retained by the Capitals.

"Shreyas isn't there I think. I am not there. So, someone else would have to come. I would have known if I were taken," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel while analysing IPL's mega auction retention prospective.

Ahead of the 2020 season, Delhi Capitals had traded left-arm spinner Jagadeesha Suchith for Ashwin from Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). In the last two editions, Ashwin played 28 games for DC, claiming 20 wickets an economy rate of 7.55.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer joined the Delhi-based franchise in 2015. He was retained by them in the 2018 IPL auction before being handed over the captaincy later in the season. Iyer led DC to the playoffs in 2019 and followed it with their maiden appearance in the final in 2020.

Ahead of the IPL 2021, Shreyas sustained a shoulder injury and missed the first half of the tournament, which saw Rishabh Pant being appointed as Delhi’s new captain. Although Iyer returned to the side for the IPL 14 second phase, the DC management decided to continue with Pant as skipper.

Shreyas Iyer has represented Delhi Capitals in 87 matches, scoring 1916 runs at a strike rate of 123.95 with 16 half-centuries.
