Ashwin had previously mankaded Jos Buttler in IPL 2019.
DC brought in Akshar Patel for the injured Amit Mishra as the spin partner to R Ashwin. Ashwin had already made news for himself ever since he moved from Kings XI Punjab to DC, given that coach of his new franchise Ricky Ponting is a strictly against Ashwin’s cheeky mankading method of running out non-strikers.
Ashwin did it in IPL 2019 against RR when he ran out Jos Buttler and Ponting had said that he won’t allow Ashwin to do the same when he plays for DC. Ashwin also mentioned that he had a talk with his new coach on the issue and all was well.

Well, Ashwin tested that relationship when he almost mankaded Aaron Finch when DC came out to defend the 197-run target. As the offie was about to bowl the fourth ball of the 3rd over, he stopped just before letting the ball go, as non-striker Finch was way ahead out of his crease.
Finch realized Ashwin had not bowled the ball and looked at him, while Ashwin smilingly looked at him and went back to his run-up mark. His mock mankad even got a smile out of the usually serious Ponting in the DC dugout.
