Sooryavanshi broke Chris Gayle's record for most sixes (59) in one IPL edition.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was the star of Rajasthan Royals' (RR) innings in their Eliminator match of the IPL 2026 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). This match is being played at the Mullanpur Stadium in New Chandigarh on May 27, 2026.
Pat Cummins, SRH captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first. And Vaibhav Sooryavanshi seemed like he was on a mission. While Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to get rhythm in his innings, Sooryavanshi was hammering sixes and fours on route to a 16-ball fifty as RR posted 80 runs in the powerplay.
Sooryavanshi’s aggression was so intense that SRH bowlers had no idea where to bowl to him, and he looked good to break Chris Gayle’s record for fastest T20 century as he reached 97 runs in 28 balls. He went for a six on the 29th ball to get the record, but was caught at third man.
Sooryavanshi hit 12 sixes and 5 fours in his knock, breaking Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in an IPL season. Sooryavanshi now has 65 sixes to his name in 15 games in IPL 2026, with 680 runs at a strike rate of 242.
He was gutted when he got out, but received a standing ovation from the crowd in New Chandigarh and his RR dugout. SRH owner Kavya Maran, on the other hand, wasn’t so thrilled at his dismissal and was caught on camera clapping half-heartedly.
