Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi narrowly missed Chris Gayle’s record for the fastest IPL century, falling for 97 off 29 balls in the Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in New Chandigarh on Wednesday (May 27).

After being put into bat, the teenage prodigy launched a brutal assault on the SRH bowling attack right from the first over. He made full use of the powerplay, reaching his fifty in just 16 balls.

The 15-year-old continued his carnage after the half-century, but missed out on the three-figure mark by just three runs. Sitting on 97 runs off 28 deliveries, he needed a boundary on the very next ball to officially eclipse Gayle's 30-ball hundred record set back in 2013.

Instead of finding the boundary, Sooryavanshi attempted an upper-cut against a wide bouncer from Praful Hinge, top-edging the ball straight to Smaran Ravichandran at deep third man. The youngster stood frozen on the pitch in absolute disbelief before making a devastated walk back to the dugout

Sooryavanshi’s whirlwind knock was studded with 5 fours and 12 sixes. As a result, he surpassed Gayle's long-standing tally of 59 sixes in an IPL season. By the end of his explosive innings, the teenager had 65 sixes to his credit in this year's IPL.

Cricket fraternity was left in awe as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi dismantled the SRH bowling lineup in the all-important knockout fixture.
