Sarfaraz Khan made 62 runs on debut before getting run out in mixup with Jadeja.
Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja had added 204 runs for 4th wicket after Mark Wood and Tom Hartley reduced India to 33/3 inside 9 overs at the start. Rohit Sharma slammed his 11th Test ton, scoring 131 with 14 fours and 3 sixes, before getting out to Mark Wood.
Ravindra Jadeja then carried on with debutant Sarfaraz for company. But the right-hander took initiative and counterattacked England bowlers. Sarfaraz raced off to his fifty in 48 balls. He was batting on 62 in 66 balls with 7 fours and 1 six and had added 77 runs with Jadeja.
But tragedy happened in the 82nd over of the day, when Jadeja, batting on 99, was looking to steal a single off a James Anderson delivery to get to his hundred. But the single attempt was misjudged because as soon as Jadeja pushed the ball to mid-on, Sarfaraz reacted instantly to Jadeja's call and took off in order to help his partner get to his ton.
But Jadeja realized he wouldn’t make it to the other end as the ball went straight to Mark Wood, who was charging in. This left Sarfaraz high and dry and Wood’s throw was a direct hit at the non-striker's end.
As Sarfaraz made his way back to the pavilion amidst applause, cameras captured Rohit Sharma reacting in anger and then throwing his cap in agony in the dressing room.
