Gill got out after scoring 104 while trying to reverse sweep off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.
This was Gill's third century in Test cricket and his first at the No. 3 position. Before this, the right-hander had not scored a single fifty at the one-down spot in his 11 Test innings.
With this knock, Shubman didn’t only regain his form but also rescued the hosts out of trouble. However, in a moment of rush of blood, he threw it away, trying to reverse sweep off-spinner Shoaib Bashir while batting on 104.
After the day’s play, Shubman Gill expressed delight that he managed to end his lean patch but the 24-year-old was sure that his father wouldn't be happy with the way he was dismissed.
Gill himself admitted that he left a bit out there. His ton propelled India to 255, setting a daunting target of 399 for the visitors.
“Definitely very pleased but I left a bit out there to be honest,” Gill told JioCinema.
Shubman Gill was lucky to survive three close calls in the first session. There were two LBW shouts against the batter where he was saved by the DRS and then a thick outside edge flew past Joe Root at first slip.
“The first one I didn’t feel it (inside edge onto pad). Shreyas told me to take it in case it’s umpire’s call. I saw the point fielder go there and I thought it was a percentage shot,” Gill stated.
“Should’ve just played the 5-6 overs till tea. Pretty decent wicket to bat on. Not an easy kind of wicket to hit on the rise. Have to apply yourself because the odd one is turning and odd one is keeping low,” he added.
When asked about his father's reaction to his dismissal, Gill said he would get to know after reaching the hotel.
“I think so (getting pulled up by his father for that shot that got him out). I’ll get to know once I get back to the hotel but I think so. He comes for most of my games, there’s no such pressure,” he remarked.
Chasing the target, England raced to 67/1 in 14 overs at stumps on Day 3, with Zak Crawley (29*) and nightwatchman Rehan Ahmed (9*) unbeaten in the middle.
According to Gill, the game is titled in favour of the hosts: “I think it’s 70-30 at the moment. Morning session will be key. We’ve seen there is moisture in the morning and help for fast bowlers and spinners.”
