Yashasvi Jaiswal fell after scoring 80 off 74 balls in India's first innings during the Hyderabad Test.
In reply to England’s first innings total of 246, Jaiswal provided India with a brisk start. The southpaw notched up his half-century in just 47 balls and finished the opening day on 76 not out off 70 balls.
Jaiswal started the second day with a boundary but a moment of over-enthusiasm cost him the wicket against Joe Root.
“Yes, it would have been amazing if I scored a hundred but I think what brought me here was my process and thinking,” Jaiswal said in a press conference after the close of play on Day 2.
“I was trying to do my best and sometimes it (playing aggressive cricket) can work well, sometimes it won’t. I can commit a mistake and get out but I am trying to make sure that I learn from my mistakes,” he added.
While Jaiswal laid the perfect platform with a swashbuckling 74-ball 80 (10 fours and 3 sixes), vital contributions from KL Rahul (86), Ravindra Jadeja (81*), KS Bharat (41) and Akshar Patel (35*) propelled the hosts to 421/7 at stumps on Day 2, leading England by a huge margin of 175 runs.
When asked if it was his plan to attack the English spinners, the southpaw replied: “I don’t think it was any tactic (attacking England spinners early on Thursday evening), as I was just thinking to play well against certain balls, play some positive shots.”
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his Test debut during the tour of West Indies last year, is playing his first Test in India and he said that the atmosphere at home differs from that of other countries.
"This is my first Test match in India and I was thinking of contributing and doing well for my team. When I was playing in the West Indies and South Africa, it was quite different and even the environment was different. But I was really enjoying all the places, and it is always a proud moment and honour whenever I go and play for my country," the 22-year-old remarked.
