India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal put on a show with the bat on Day 1 of the opening Test against England at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

Opting to bat first, England’s innings folded for 246 in 64.3 overs. Skipper Ben Stokes waged a lone battle for the visitors, scoring 70 off 88 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes.

India’s spin troika of R Ashwin (3-68), Ravindra Jadeja (3-88) and Akshar Patel (2-33) ran through the English batting line-up, claiming a total of eight scalps among them.

In reply, Jaiswal took the touring bowling attack to the cleaners as he added 80 runs for the opening wicket with Rohit Sharma in just 12.2 overs. While the southpaw notched up his half-century in just 47 deliveries, the Indian captain fell after scoring 24 off 27 balls.

Despite Rohit’s dismissal, Jaiswal didn’t change his approach. The left-hander kept hitting boundaries at regular intervals to finish the day on 76 not out off 70 balls, including 9 fours and 3 sixes.

Shubman Gill held the other end firmly to remain unbeaten on 14 as the hosts ended the opening day on 119/1 in 23 overs, trailing England by 127 runs.

For his scintillating half-century, Yashasvi Jaiswal garnered rich praise from the cricket fraternity on social media platform X.
