Ashwin starred with both bat and ball in India’s Chennai Test victory over Bangladesh.
Ravichandran Ashwin starred with both bat and ball in India’s thumping 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test match at Chepauk.
Ashwin slammed a dazzling century (113 off 133) in the first innings when India were struggling at 144/6. Thanks to his 199-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (86), the hosts racked up 376/10 in their first essay.
While Ashwin failed to claim a wicket in Bangladesh’s first innings, he tormented the visitors with a five-wicket haul in the second dig. His figures of 6/88 in 21 overs help India bundle out the tourists for 234.
It was Ashwin’s 37th five-wicket haul, the joint-second most by any bowler in Test cricket. He currently stands alongside the legendary Shane Warne in the all-time list, and the two are only behind Muthiah Muralidaran's 67.
After his match-winning exploits, Ashwin was being congratulated by his teammates. Star batter Virat Kohli walked up to him and bowed down, the video of which went viral on social media.
India skipper Rohit Sharma also heaped praise on Ashwin and acknowledged his dedication to the sport, regardless of the format or platform.
"Every time we look up to him, he's always there for us whether with the bat or ball. I don't know if I speak here, it'll be enough of what he does for this team. Every time we see him come out and do the job, it's always so brilliant. He's never out of the game. The last competitive cricket he played was IPL and then he had some fun playing TNPL. We watched him bat up the order and that's what helped him as well to bat the way he did," Rohit said in the post-match presentation.
