Rishabh Pant was not convinced the ball would hit the stumps, but DRS exactly the opposite.
India pacer Mohammed Siraj was visibly angry after being denied the wicket of Bangladeshi opener Zakir Hasan on day 2 of the ongoing first Test in Chennai.
India was bowled out for 376 runs early on day 2 with R Ashwin making 113 and Jadeja falling for 86 runs. Hasan Mahmud took a fifer, while Taskin Ahmed picked three wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah had given India an early wicket, scalping Shadman Islam in the first over itself. And Mohammed Siraj could’ve had a wicket early on as well, only he couldn’t convince Rohit Sharma to take a review despite consulting with Rishabh Pant.
The right-arm fast went all guns blazing in his first outing, frightening the visiting top-order batter. The sixth ball of his over hit Hasan in the pads, leaving Siraj ecstatic because he knew he had trapped the Bangladeshi batter in front.
The umpire wasn’t convinced, while India skipper Rohit Sharma didn’t opt for the DRS with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant suggesting, “Height nahi hain, nikal jayege leg-side (It’s not high but will miss leg-stump).”
Siraj had bowled somewhat fuller on the leg stump, swinging back in. Zakir Hasan attempted to flick, but instead played all over the ball and was whacked on the pads. Siraj insisted on a review, but Rohit Sharma suspected he was swinging down the leg.
After Siraj finished the over, the ball tracking revealed that the ball was pitching in line and striking the leg stumps. While Rohit smiled sheepishly after viewing the review, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant apologized to the bowler for making an incorrect decision.
Later on Akash Deep hurt Bangladesh more, removing Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque in consecutive balls. Later on, Bumrah came back to remove Mushfiqur Rahim, while Siraj got his first wicket in the form of Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, leaving Bangladesh 53/5 at the time of writing this piece.
