The first Test between India and Bangladesh got underway at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on September 19, 2024. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to field first.

Shanto's choice was proven correct as Hasan Mahmud shattered the same Indian top order.

Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0), and Virat Kohli (0) failed to reach double figures. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant (39) contributed 62 runs for the fourth wicket, leading India to lunch on 88/3. However, shortly after lunch, Mahmud also got rid of Pant.

KL Rahul followed soon after, scoring 16 runs before falling to Mehidy Hasan, leaving India at 144/6. But then, on his home field, R Ashwin launched an attack on Bangladesh bowlers, with Ravindra Jadeja holding one end.

The duo broke several records as they counter-attacked against the Bangladesh bowlers and scored at a brisk pace. R Ashwin was the main scorer as Ravindra Jadeja initially held one end up. But in the final session of the day, both Ashwin and Jadeja went after the spinners Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan.

R Ashwin brought up his 6th Test ton and second in Chennai off just 108 deliveries. He remained unbeaten on 102 off 112 balls, while Jadeja remained not out on 86 runs when the first day’s play ended. The duo had added 195* runs for the 7th wicket to give India the advantage.

For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud with 4/58 was the standout bowler, while Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan picked one scalp each.

The cricket fraternity lauded R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s partnership and their individual contributions as well on social media.
