Rohit Sharma is now equal with Ricky Ponting in no. of ODI centuries-30.
Rohit Sharma (101) and Shubman Gill (112) added 212 runs for the first wicket laying a good platform for the remaining batters to go for the maximum possible runs at the batting paradise. However, India lost some momentum and wickets as well.
Ishan Kishan got run out for 17 runs and Virat Kohli got out caught at mid-off trying to clear the in-field for 36 runs. Suryakumar Yadav made 14 and Washington Sundar made 9 runs. Then, Hardik Pandya (54) and Shardul Thakur (25) added 54 runs for the 7th wicket to give some last overs' impetus to the innings as India finished at 385/9 in 50 overs.
India captain Rohit Sharma had not made a century for 16 ODI innings since January 2020 and was longing for one and it came in great style as he hit 9 fours and 6 sixes in his 101 in 85 balls as he and Shubman destroyed the Kiwi bowlers in the first 26 overs.
As he celebrated his century, which was his 30th in the ODI format, the Indian camp was seen cheering for the captain and Suryakumar Yadav could be seen signaling to the skipper to go for a double ton.
