The Indian team defeated England by 317 runs and drew level 1-1 in the ongoing four-match Test series. England had won the first Test match by 227 runs and this time around, the home side came back with vengeance.

Set 482 runs to win in just over 2 days, England batting was not equipped to handle the turn and bounce that the Chennai pitch provided the Indian spinners. Joe Root made 33, while Rory Burns, Dan Lawrence, and Moeen Ali (43, 5 sixes), all contributed well to reduce the margin of defeat.

However, Akshar Patel on his debut picked five wickets (5/60) including the scalps of Root, Pope, and Sibley. R Ashwin contributed with 3 wickets and Kuldeep Yadav picked 2 wickets as well, in his first Test in two years.

India had batted first after Virat Kohli had won the toss and posted 329 with Rohit Sharma making 161 and Ajinkya Rahane (67) and Rishabh Pant (58*) being the major contributors. Moeen Ali picked 4/128 for England.

England in their first innings, managed 134 with Ben Foakes making 42* and R Ashwin taking 5/43, while Ishant Sharma and Akshar Patel taking 2 wickets each. This gave India a huge lead by 195 runs and they capitalized hugely on the same.

R Ashwin then came to the party with the bat, scoring his 5th Test century (106), while Virat Kohli made a sublime 62 runs, as India made 286 and gained a total lead of 481 runs.

The victory also helped India go to the second spot in the World Test Championship. The next Test will be played in the New Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad, which will also be the very first day/night Test between India and England.

The cricket fraternity was elated at the Indian team’s clinical performance and lauded the performances of the Indian players on Twitter.
