Chasing 420 to win, the hosts were 39/1 at stumps on Day 4. They may have lost Cheteshwar Pujara early on the final day but Shubman Gill was going after the English bowlers.

The stylish opener was particularly severe on off-spinner Dom Bess as he brought up his third half-century in Test cricket to keep India in the contest.

Just when Gill was looking set for a big one, veteran England pacer James Anderson produced a brute of a delivery to remove the right-hander.

Anderson got the ball to reverse and the length was spot on as Gill came forward to defend it but was defeated by the late movement.

In the same over, Anderson came up with a peach of an in-swinger to send back India’s vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane for a duck.

For England, Jack Leach claimed four wickets in the second innings while Anderson returned with the figures of 3 for 17 in 11 overs.
