In a pleasant news for the Indian cricket fans, senior pacer Mohammad Shami has resumed “low-intensity” bowling at the National Cricket Academy after recovering significantly from the wrist injury.

According to a PTI report, Shami’s fractured wrist has healed considerably and he could be available for selection for the final two games of the ongoing Test series against England.

Notably, Shami had copped a blow on his wrist from Pat Cummins’ short delivery during India’s second innings debacle at Adelaide on December 19.

The injury was so severe that it ruled him out of the remaining Border-Gavaskar Trophy fixtures Down Under. Subsequently, he returned home for extensive rehabilitation programme at the NCA.

On Friday (February 5), Shami had shared a video on Twitter in which he was seen bowling at the NCA in Bengaluru alongside Navdeep Saini, who sustained a groin injury during the Gabba Test last month.

“Shami’s forearm is fine right now. He will have some low intensity net sessions for the next few days. He has been advised to bowl around 18 deliveries a day at 50 to 60 percent effort,” a source in the know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“Since has been out for more than month and half, that is how the workload will be build,” the source added.

While Shami is bowling from a shorter run-up currently, he is likely to get back to medium intensity training by next week and then a final call will be taken on his selection for the last two Tests versus England.

“The pink ball Test is still two and half weeks away (February 24). There is a very good chance that Shami will be fit and available for selection.

“That he has started bowling means that his forearm is fine. He doesn’t have any other niggles as of now so by the end of next week, a more clearer picture will emerge,” said the source.

The squad for the final two Tests will be picked during the second Test match in Chennai, scheduled to begin on February 13.
