Virat Kohli's wicket sparked a debate among the experts.
In reply to Australia’s first innings total of 263, the hosts were reeling at 139/7 before Akshar Patel (74) and R Ashwin (37) forged a 114-run partnership to propel the team to 262.
Batting in the second innings, the visitors did well to finish the day on 61/1, extending their lead to 62 runs.
Apart from the fierce contest between bat and ball, the second day’s action also grabbed the headlines for star India batter Virat Kohli’s controversial dismissal.
In the second session, Australia’s debutant spinner Matthew Kuhnemann managed to sneak past Kohli's bat and hit his pads. The on-field umpire Nitin Menon gave it out and though Virat opted for DRS, the replays, especially from the front suggested that the ball had hit the inside edge of the bat and the front pad simultaneously.
But while reviewing the replays, TV umpire Richard Illingworth decided that the ball was hitting the pad first for him and ruled in favor of the bowler after the ball tracker returned the umpire’s call, meaning that the on-field umpire’s decision stood.
The incident sparked a debate among the experts but Aussie off-spinner Nathan Lyon said "the right decision was made."
"I think the right decision was made. No doubt Virat would be saying that (he hit it) and it probably should have gone his way. Hats off to the umpires. It's tough in these conditions. We bowlers are trying to put pressure on them to get the decision in our favour. In the end, the decision was right," Lyon said on Star Sports after the close of the second day's play.
Nathan Lyon, who claimed a five-wicket haul in India’s first innings, also praised India's spin all-rounders Akshar Patel and R Ashwin for their batting effort.
"They are good batters and they could bat in the top 6 in most other sides, here they are batting at 8 and 9, they are not bowlers who can bat but proper batters," said Lyon.
