England received a two-point penalty by ICC and players were fined 10% of match fees.
Former India cricketer Ravi Shastri and ex-England captain Michael Vaughan had different reactions as due to a slow over rate deduction, England lost two vital WTC (World Test Championship) points after their exciting victory at Lord's.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Wednesday that England had been penalized 10% of their match fee and had two points taken away from their World Test Championship (WTC) total. As a result, England's points percentage fell from 66.67 percent to 61.11 percent, and their WTC standings fell from 24 to 22 points out of a possible 36.
As a result, England has slipped from second to third place in the WTC points table, allowing Sri Lanka to move up to the second position behind leaders Australia.
Ravi Shastri remarked that the Ben Stokes-led team could compensate for the points lost by focusing on winning matches. He brought up Australia's four-point penalty for a slow over rate in the 2020 Boxing Day Test against India in Melbourne during the 2019–21 WTC cycle. He clarified that New Zealand advanced to the final while Australia lost out on second place.
“It hurts, as Australia found out in the first cycle of the World Test Championship. They had a slow over rate against India, and it cost them the second place,ce and New Zealand qualified for that final. So you’ve got to be fully aware of all this. There’ll be certain games where they’ll probably make up for it," Shastri was quoted as saying in a video posted on ICC’s Instagram account.
Shastri believes England has plenty of potential to win games and recoup lost points, beginning with the fourth Test against India in Manchester on July 23.
“But I think more than the over rate, you have to think of winning. If you focus on winning, then come the last six months, you can probably try and adjust, see how you can get those two points back, or something of that sort. But you’ve got to win, that’s more important. Because if you keep winning, that won’t matter," he added.
On the other hand, Michael Vaughan was extremely unhappy with the ICC’s ruling that only England was punished for the slow over-rate offence and India went free. He subtly accused the apex body of bias and questioned how India escaped without punishment.
Vaughan said both teams shared responsibility for the Lord's over-rate. However, with only England penalized, he was perplexed and questioned the logic of sparing India.
“Let’s be honest, both teams over rates at Lords were very very poor .. How only 1 team has been reprimanded is beyond me .. #ENGvsIND,” he wrote on X.
