Umran Malik has missed Duleep Trophy due to illness and now will miss part of Ranji Trophy.
Umran Malik, the tearaway pacer from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), will miss the first round of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 tournament due to an injury.
Malik, who last played for India during the 2023 tour of West Indies, will not be available for J&K for phase one of the Ranji Trophy that begins on October 11.
Umran, who has played 12 First-Class and 14 List-A matches, last appeared in a competitive match for SRH in the IPL 2024 against the Mumbai Indians on March 27, 2024, and conceded 15 runs in one over. He didn't play in any further games for the Pat Cummins-led team this season.
Meanwhile, Rising Kashmir report, stated that Umran Malik has suffered a hip injury and is likely to remain out of action for at least six weeks. Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) is yet to name a replacement for him in the Ranji Trophy squad.
Brigadier Anil Gupta was quoted as saying by Rising Kashmir: “After recovering from dengue, Umran suffered from a toe injury and followed it with a hamstring injury. However, after recovering from his left hamstring injury, he complained of issues around his left hip during bowling, and consultation and subsequent scans had shown a stress fracture in his left hip.”
According to reports, JKCA and Umran spent the last week conducting intensive evaluations and conversations with a team of professionals, including a radiologist, nuclear medicine expert, infectious disease specialist, and endocrinologist, before deciding to sideline him for 5-6 weeks. He is projected to be available for the second phase of the Ranji Trophy in 2024-25.
Mithun Manhas, Member of Cricket Operations and Development JKCA stated: “He is just going through a bad phase, which is a common occurrence in every player’s career. We hope that after he is fully recovered, he will return to the field with fresh energy and josh.”
Jammu & Kashmir is in Elite Group A of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 and will begin its campaign on October 11 against Maharashtra at the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar.
J&K will face Odisha in the second encounter and Services in the third, both at Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium. Jammu and Kashmir's next four Elite Group A matches are against Meghalaya, Tripura, defending champions Mumbai, and Baroda.
Umran made his international debut for India against Ireland in Dublin on June 26, 2022, and gave up 14 runs in one over. He took his maiden wicket for India in the next match against Ireland, bowling Lorcan Tucker. Umran has 11 wickets in eight Twenty20 Internationals for India.
On November 25, 2022, the youthful pacer made his one-day international debut against New Zealand in Auckland, finishing with 2 for 66 in 10 overs. He has dismissed 13 batters in ten ODI outings so far.
