The deadline for naming the squad are 23rd April, with injury replacements allowed till 23rd May.
Each of the participating team has to announce their 15-man squad for the ICC World Cup 2019 by end of the April and until now, only New Zealand, the finalists of the 2015 edition have announced their squad. Other teams have until 23rd April to announce their sides and can continue making adjustments until 23rd May for eventualities such as injury to players.
Here is an update on when other teams might announce their squads for the ICC event:
India: 15 April
Pakistan: 18 April
The 1992 World Cup Champions Pakistan will announce their squad on April 18. Pakistan, who haven’t done much in the ODI format since their ICC Champions Trophy 2017 win, has announced a 23-man probable squad, which will be trimmed to 15. The five-match ODI series in England in early May should offer them strong preparation for the marquee event.
South Africa: 18 April
Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, South Africa have never gone past the semi-finals stage in the World Cup since their readmission in 1991. They used the recent series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka to trial new candidates for the World Cup. With injuries to key players and form issues, South Africa will likely announce their squad on April 18, with a camp for selected players beginning on May 12.
Afghanistan has announced a preliminary squad
One of the most inspiring stories in world cricket, Afghanistan team has announced a 23-member preliminary squad. Their decision to remove Asghar Afghan as captain and hand it over to Gulbadin Naib was a shocking one Afghan, along with 22 others, is part of a 23-member preliminary squad training in South Africa. They will play six practice matches before a final squad is announced.
Bangladesh: between 15 and 20 April
Bangladesh’s Habibul Bashar revealed that the board is hoping to announce the Tigers’ squad between 15 and 20 April after the conclusion of a 50-over domestic tournament. A World Cup camp is scheduled from 24 April. Bangladesh will play a tri-series involving West Indies and Ireland in Ireland before the commencement of World Cup.
England: 17 April
Hosts England will be announcing their World Cup squad on April 17. The no.1 ranked ODI side is considered hot favorites to win their first ever 50-over World Cup trophy as the stars and planets have aligned perfectly to potentially make them winners. The big question is whether they bring in Jofra Archer, who, having only recently qualified for the country, is yet to play a game for them. England is scheduled to play six ODIs prior to the World Cup, with a five-match series against Pakistan in early May.
Australia: date not yet confirmed
Five-time winners and current defending champions Australia are yet to announce their squad and there is no set date to do so. They are suddenly looking well-placed for a good run at the event after having won each of their last eight ODIs across India and UAE. The delay in announcement of the squad can be blamed on CA assessing the form of David Warner and Steve Smith, who are engaged in IPL 2019. They have a training camp scheduled in early May, and some practice matches against New Zealand.
West Indies: date not yet confirmed
With the likes of Chris Gayle and Andre Russell likely to be in contention for selection, Windies could emerge a really strong-looking side in lead up to the World Cup. Many of their potential stars are shining brightly in the ongoing IPL and the delay in announcing the squads may have a look at their performances before taking a final call. They will feature alongside Bangladesh in an ODI tri-series in Ireland in May, prior to the tournament.
Sri Lanka: date not yet confirmed
Cricket Sri Lanka is currently holding its provincial one-day cup which has been mandated for players in order to earn a spot in the country’s World Cup squad. The tournament is set to conclude on 11 April and one suspects that the squad will be announced soon after. They have a couple of ODIs scheduled in Scotland prior to the 23 May deadline.
