India will face New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy on March 9 in Dubai.
Addressing the media at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday (March 8), Shubman said that the team's focus is on winning the title, and the captain is also focused on the same.
Rohit was under intense scrutiny in the lead up to the Champions Trophy after the team's 0-3 whitewash in the home Test series against New Zealand and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy debacle on Australia soil.
Such was his struggles with the bat that Sharma had even dropped himself from the fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney.
Speculations were rife that Rohit Sharma’s India career won’t go beyond the Champions Trophy as the team management and selectors want to begin the process of transition before the ODI World Cup 2027.
Asked if Rohit will retire after the final on Sunday (March 9), Gill said that the captain might take that call following the game.
"We have not discussed it. All the chatter and the discussion are about winning the match. And what we have to do to win the match. He has not spoken to the team about this or to me. I think Rohit is thinking about winning the final as well. I think he is focusing on winning the Champions Trophy first. I think, once the match gets over tomorrow, he will take a call, but I have not heard of this from anyone in the team," Gill told reporters.
India are due to face New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The two teams have met twice in an ICC event final, both of which have been won by the Kiwis.
Gill expressed his excitement about playing in his second ICC final and emphasized the team’s determination to go one step further than they did in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they failed to cross the last hurdle.
"Very excited for my second ICC final… will try to do what we couldn't do last time (2023 World Cup)," Gill said.
India's batting lineup has been a dominant force throughout the tournament, with contributions from all key players. Gill praised the current unit, calling it the best he has been a part of.
"This is the best Indian batting lineup I have been part of. All-time greats Virat [Kohli] bhai and Rohit [Sharma] bhai. Rohit bhai is one of the best openers, Virat bhai is an all-time great. We have so much depth in our batting — KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer — everyone," he remarked.
Regarding the pitch conditions for the summit clash, Gill mentioned that the surface is expected to remain consistent with how it has played throughout the competition, despite the hot weather.
"The pitch is not going to behave differently. Irrespective of the heat, it will play like it has in the tournament so far," he stated.
