Rohit slammed a match-winning hundred in the second ODI against England.
Rohit, who was under scrutiny for his string of low scores in the last five months, took the English bowling attack to the cleaners at the Barabati Stadium.
Chasing 305 to win, the right-hander slammed 119 off 90 balls with 12 boundaries and 7 sixes, helping India get over the line with four wickets in hand and 33 deliveries to spare.
With this match-winning knock, Rohit surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record of scoring most centuries for India after turning 30. Currently, the Indian captain has 36 international tons after he turned 30.
Speaking to PTI, former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin reacted to Rohit Sharma’s feat, saying that it could not have come at a better time with the Champions Trophy 2025 around the corner.
"He is amazing, class player, but runs were deserting, but he got going yesterday. I didn't see the match, but I heard that he batted very well. Records are meant to be broken, I congratulate him for breaking the record. I wish him all the best for the Champions Trophy. I think if Rohit Sharma clicks in the Champions Trophy, I have no doubt we will win the Champions Trophy. I want to wish him all the best for Champions Trophy, his form has come at the right time, I wish the team all the best. Like we won the T20 World Cup, we want them to get the Champions Trophy as well," Azharuddin stated.
On Rohit's retirement rumours, Azharuddin said: "It's up to him . All these decisions are best left for the individual. Many people say 'abhi retire ho jao'. The player who plays know how intense his feeling for the game is."
Rohit Sharma's scores during the 2024/25 season across formats read 6, 5, 23, 8, 2, 52, 0, 8, 18, 11, 3, 6, 10, 3, 9 and 2, with a sum total of 166 runs from 16 innings at an average of 10.37.
He was all over the place during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, scoring only 31 runs in five innings at an abysmal average of 6.20.
While Rohit managed to score just 2 in the ODI series opener against England, he bounced back with a match-winning ton in the second game.
India will next face England in the third and final ODI at Ahmedabad on February 12. The Men in Blue will then take part in the Champions Trophy, slated to be held in Pakistan and UAE from February 19 to March 9.
