Bangladesh registered a series-clinching five-run victory over India in the second ODI.
Opting to bat first, the hosts rode on Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s unbeaten 100 off 83 balls and Mahmudullah’s 96-ball 77 to post 271/7 on the board.
Washington Sundar was the stand-out bowler for India, claiming three wickets by conceding 37 runs in his 10 overs. Umran Malik (2-58) and Mohammed Siraj (2-73) also returned with two scalps each.
In reply, the Men in Blue were reduced to 65/4 with Virat Kohli (5), Shikhar Dhawan (8), Sundar (11) and KL Rahul (14) getting out cheaply.
Amid the pressure situation, Shreyas Iyer (82) and Akshar Patel (56) added 107 runs for the fifth wickets to bail India out of trouble. Once the partnership was broken, the visitors suffered another mini collapse and slipped to 213/8.
Just when it seemed that India’s innings will fold soon, skipper Rohit Sharma, who sustained a thumb injury while fielding earlier in the game, produced a blazing half-century to almost take the tourists over the finishing line.
Rohit took the Bangladeshi attack to the cleaners in the death overs, slamming a half-century in just 27 balls. With 20 needed off the last over, Sharma (51* off 28 balls) smashed Mustafizur Rahman for a couple of boundaries and a six but it wasn’t enough as India ended with 266/9 in 50 overs.
For his blistering knock under immense pressure, Rohit Sharma garnered rich praise from the cricket fraternity on Twitter even though he failed to take his team home.
